Velociraptor means "speedy thief." This was a fast, two legged, meat-eating dinosaur. It was about 3 feet long from head to tail and weighed from 15 to 33 pounds. This small meat eater was nothing like the big man killers you see in the movies.
Its long snout was armed with about 80 sharp, curved teeth. On the middle toe of each foot was a 3.5 inch long, retractible claw. Scientists believe this was Velociraptor's main weapon. A member of the Dromaeosaurid group of dinosaurs, it is believed that Velociraptor was quite intelligent. This was based on the brain/body weight ratio.
Velociraptor lived during the late Cretaceous period.Fossil remains of Velociraptor have been found in Mongolia, Russia, and China. Velociraptor was discovered by paleontologist H. F. Osborn in Mongolia in 1924.
