Utahraptor (robber from Utah) was a large dromaeosaurid that lived during the mid-Cretaceous period. It was a predator with long 9 to15 inch claws on the middle toes. It weighed about a ton and was fast-moving and agile. It was bipedal (walked on two legs) and possibly exhibited a bird-like behavior. Based on its skeletal structure, it had a large head that sat upon a curved, flexible neck. The teeth were sharp and serrated . There were large, sharp claws on three fingers of each arm. It may have hunted in packs.

Considering the skeletal structure of the tail, it is believed it was used for balance and fast turning ability. It had a relatively large brain and large eyes. If intelligence can be based on the ratio of a creatures brain size to body weight, the Utahraptor was very intelligent indeed. It was 16 to 23 feet long.

Utahraptor was a carnivore, a meat eater. It probably ate any creature it could chase down and kill.

Fossilized remains of Utahraptor were first found in eastern Utah (in the western United States) in 1991. Paleontologists James Ian Kirkland, Robert Gaston and Donald Burge named Utahraptor in 1993.

The plush toy Utahraptor was made by Wild Republic, but is now retired.
