Find the toy styracosaurs at The Forest Cottage.
This is a plush Styracosaurus from Dakin and a toy Styracosaurus from Safari Ltd. Styracosaurus means "spiked lizard." He was quadrapedal and walked about on short legs. He was about 18 feet long and 6 feet tall and weighed up to 3 tons. Along the back of his skull were six spikes and he had a 2-foot-long horn on his nose and two small horns above his eyes. These spikes and horns were probably for protection as well as jousting matches with rivals during mating season.
Styracosaurus was a big, bulky animal with a short tail, big skull and a beak. He was a plant-eater. He was a ceratopsian and had cheek teeth used to chew the plants he ate.
Styracosaurus lived in the late Cretaceous period.
Scientists believe that Styracosaurus may have been a herding animal. The assumption was made based upon findings of many large deposits of bones of the same species in an area. Styracosaurus hatched from eggs.
Measurement of intelligence among dinosaurs is based upon the size of the brain in relation to body weight. In this regard, it is believed that Styracosaurus was intermediate among the dinosaurs.
Fossils of Styracosaurus have been found in Alberta, Canada, and in the USA. It was named by L. M. Lambe in 1913.
