Brachiosaurus (BRAK-ee-oh-SAW-rus) means "arm lizard." This dinosaur was about 85 feet long and 45 feet tall. It was one of the largest dinosaurs found. It had a long neck, small head and short, thick tail. It weighed between 33 and 88 tons.
Its teeth were chisel-like. Its nostrils were on the top of its head. The size of the nostrils indicate that it might have had a good sense of smell. Brachiosaurs were herbivores or plant eaters.
Among the contemporaries of Brachiosaurus were other giant Sauropods including Camarasaurus, Supersaurus, Ultrasauros, and Haplocanthosaurus.
It is believed that Brachiosaurus lived on land and not in the water as some scientists previously thought. They were quadrupedal, walking on four legs. The front legs were longer than the hind legs.
Did an adult Brachiosaur have any predators? Probably not. The largest predators living during that time were too small to be able to bring down a large Brachiosaur. Those predators included Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Torvosaurus.
It is believed that Brachiosaurs traveled in herds. They may have hatched from eggs since most sauropods laid eggs. They were not laid in a nest but in a linear pattern indicating they were laid as the animal walked. As a result of these findings, scientists believe Brachiosaurus did not care for the eggs.
Brachiosaurus' brain was very tiny, indicating it had a low intelligence.
Fossilized skeletal remains of Brachiosaurus have been found in the Grand River Valley, in western Colorado, USA, and in Tanzania, Africa.
