squirrel monkey title

This is a Squirrel Monkey. It is one of the commonest of the New World Monkeys.

The Squirrel Monkey, real squirrel monkeySaimiri, is a small, interesting animal that inhabits the forest from Costa Rica to Bolivia and Peru. It behaves like a squirrel in more than its preference for trees. It possesses an inquisitive little face with rather large eyes and small ears. On its head it may have a crown of grey or black; its back, hands and feet are a vivid orange-yellow, its shoulders, legs and other parts may be a yellowish gray. This, at any rate, is a picture of the very colorful squirrel monkey

These little monkeys prefer the sunlit scrub woodlands rather than the dark forest. They are active during the day and rarely come down to the ground. They are about 10 to 16 inches in length with the long non-prehensile tail being about 17 inches long.

The squirrel monkey is omnivorous and feeds on insects, fruit, lizards, eggs and small birds. It travels in small groups looking for food or other morsels to chase. It is a curious little creature and is quite intelligent. They are well liked as a pet.

They are social animals and live is groups calls troops, containing from 10 to 20 or more animals. They have been known to live about 15 to 20 years. They have a large variety of vocal calls.

The gestation period is about 6 months and the female gives birth to one baby every other year.
