The Gray Wolf or Timber Wolf (Canis lupus) is a large canid. Wolves are social animals and live in packs ranging in number from about 2 to 15. These packs are comprised of family members. There is a ranking order among the wolves. The leader is called an alpha male.
A large wolf pack travels great distances.
Some packs cover up to 250 square miles. Most wolf packs keep their distance from each other.
The wolf's prey is usually large mammals such as deer, moose and caribou. The pack will work together to hunt and they generally hunt at night. Other prey includes smaller mammals and even fish and insects. Wolves cannot sustain long chases and if they cannot bring down their prey within about 1000 yards they will abandon the chase.
Wolves communicate with each other with barks, yelps and howls. Their communal howling takes place either in the early morning or evening.
Wolves mate for life. They mature at two years but do not begin breeding until the third year. All members of the pack are involved in caring for the pups.
The Gray Wolf's life span is from 10 to 18 years. Its only enemy is man. Wolves are an endangered species throughout the United States except in Minnesota, where it is called threatened.
