Tapirs are large woodland creatures forming the family Tapiridae of the order Perissodactyla with four front toes and three hind toes. They are brown, black, grey or white in coloration.
They are massively built with the nose and upper lip forming a short flexible trunk. There are four species living in South and Central America. They are also found in the jungles of Malaysia. Tapirs are nocturnal or night dwelling. Animals that prey on tapirs include jaguars, crocodiles and large snakes. In Malaysia the tiger is a predator. They spend a great deal of time in the water and are great swimmers.
They are shy and solitary and eat a vegetarian diet. The gestation period is about 13 months and they bear one calf. This is an endangered species.
Their lifespan is from 25 to 30 years.
