The Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is a native North American bovid with a compact (3-1/2 feet tall at the shoulder and 5-1/2 feet long), short-legged body. They are further classified into the subfamily Caprinae (goat antelopes). Both males (billies) and females (nannies) have black horns that are backward curving and dagger-like. Mountain goats have long white fur. The male has a bearded chin.

Mountain goats feed on a wide variety of grasses, sedges, herbs, shrub leaves and twigs, ferns, mosses, lichen, even conifer needles. They are exceedingly sure-footed and agile. The hooves have sharp outer rims that grip and rubbery sole that provides traction. They live above the timberline in woods, steep slopes and cliffs.

Mountain goats produce on average one kid per year after a six month gestation. Twins do occur and triplets are rare. The Mountain Goat's lifespan is about 12 to 15 years in the wild.

Mountain goats are not considered an endangered species. However, they face many dangers. Kids and yearlings are vulnerable to the hard winters. Malnutrition, avalanches, rockfalls, landslides and falls claim many victims. Golden eagles attack kids, which prey at heights difficult for most other predators. Cougars are able to maneuver in alpine habitats and do prey on adults.
