There is nothing quite as cute as a little furry chinchilla, and this little plush toy chinchilla can be just as cute. The plush toy chinchilla shown here is from Hansa. The chinchilla on this page can be found in our sponsor's Online Gift Shop.

Chinchillas are beautiful little rodents with an exquisite pale blue-gray or silver-grey fur. Once the chinchilla existed in great numbers in nature. Its original home seems to have been in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, northern Argentina and Chile. Today it is rarely seen in the wild outside of Chile.

The chinchilla dwells high in the Andes, scrambling over the rocks with amazing speed in the dark, when it is most active. At the end of each toe it has a large, soft pad which protects its feet; it possesses only vestiges of claws, so it cannot climb trees or dig in the earth. Many chinchillas lives together in holes in the rocks before the fur hunters whittled down their numbers long years ago. Stern conservation laws protect the animals today.

The chinchilla is old enough to mate when seven months old but its rate of reproduction is extremely low. Under natural conditions there is only one litter a year, but in captivity there may be two. The young - there may be one to four in a litter - are born 124 days after mating takes place. They are well developed at birth: their eyes are wide open and they have a full set of teeth. Fully clothed, they are able to move about almost from the very first. The babies are weaned and able to look after themselves when 60 days old. Until then, both parents watch over them. Length of a chinchilla's life is about nine years.
