The Waterbuck, Kobus ellipsiprymnus, is a large African antelope with a shaggy brownish grey coat. The fur is white inside the ears, around the eyes and muzzle, throat and rump. The male has long, curved, ridged horns. The female is hornless. The bulls weigh about 500 pounds.
This antelope occurs in areas of central, eastern and southern Africa, including parts of Kenya, Botswana and South Africa. It prefers grasslands within a few miles of water. As the name implies, it is a good swimmer and will take to the water readily, especially when pursued by a predator. It feeds on grass.
Breeding can occur any time of year. One calf is born. The gestation period is about 8 months.
These animals congregate in small harems of about 6 to 12 animals with one bull leading. Bachelor herds stay closeby.
