Lions are among the most impressive carnivorous mammals and attract much attention in zoos. They reach maturity at 5 or 6 years. The mane of the males appears at about 1-1/2 years. Zoo animal manes are bushier than those in the wild since they are not torn by the brush. Nubian lions don't have manes.
Lions breed in captivity, producing cubs with spots that usually disappear in about 6 months. Lions are considered old at around the age of 10. In captivity, however, they have lived for more than 25 years.
Lions hunt and travel in groups called prides. They live in much of Africa and at one time also from Greece to India. Now there are only a few lions in India. Lions prefer the open, grassy plains and avoid dense, tropical forests. They prey mainly on hoofed mammals such as zebras, wildebeests, antelopes, even buffaloes. In hunting, they charge their prey but do not pursue for a long time if they don't make the kill.
Adult males weigh about 425 pounds. Females are smaller, weighing about 250 pounds.
