Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are African scavengers and predators.
They will hunt alone or in groups. When hunting alone they will prey on small mammals, but when in groups they can take down large hoofed mammals. Generally considered scavengers, they will prey upon animals that can be captured easily. They also feed on birds, snakes, lizards, and insects.
Spotted hyenas are about 40 to 65 inches long and stand 30 to 36 inches tall; they weigh from 90 to 190 pounds. The females are larger and heavier. Coloration is brownish grey with spots.
Hyenas have powerful jaws that are specially adapted for crushing bones. They will eat all of what they catch including the skin and bones. When chasing prey they can maintain speeds of up to 32 mph for several miles.
Living in large groups call clans, the females are dominant. They raise their young in dens made in natural caves. The young can be born anytime during the year. The gestation period is from 3 to 4 months. The litter usually consists of two to four cubs, which are weaned after 12 to 16 months.
Hyena are nocturnal. They have a keen sense of smell, sight and hearing. They produce a variety of calls including the characteristic laugh that is used when the hyena is being chased or attacked.
