The hippopotamus is a large barrel-shaped animal with short limbs; these are large animals at 14 feet, a height of 4 feet at the shoulder and a weight of 4 tons. The 6 inch thick skin is almost hairless. The color is greyish black above, lighter and pinkish below. When floating in the water the eyes and nostrils protrude above water. They remain submerged for up to 6 minutes and if pressed, can remain even longer, some records showing 30 minutes.

Hippopotamuses live in herds found in hippopotamusrivers and swamps and they feed on water plants and grasses and other vegetation ashore. They remain close to water.

Not a fast or particularly adept swimmer, it is built for slow paddling and walking on the bottom in shallow water as it roots up water plants with its tusks. However, it swims powerfully enough to be able to make its way upstream against a strong current. It can run along the bottom of a lake at eight miles an hour.

The sound they make is a loud grunt or bellow. A single young is born after a gestation of about eight months; the baby often rides on its mother's back while she is swimming or floating at the surface.

Hippos are the third largest living land mammal. The name hippopotamus comes from the Greek meaning River Horse. Their lifespan is from 40 to 50 years.
