Giraffes are very tall animals, from 8 to 12 feet high at the shoulder. They browse on leaves and twigs that are more than 18 feet above the ground and especially the acacia. They use their 18 inch long black tongues to grasp the leaves.
The giraffe's large, dark-brown eyes shaded by long black lashes, have a soulful, appealing expression. The giraffe has the keenest sight of any game aimal in Africa; naturally its height allows it to command an extensive view.
Giraffes are found in Central and South Africa where they live in small herds. Giraffes make almost no sounds but can grunt or whimper and also make a sound like a whistle.
There are different types of giraffes, some are Nubian giraffes, Masai giraffes and Reticulated giraffes. You can tell the differences by their spots.
Giraffes are able to run at speeds of up to 32 miles per hour when in open country. The Reticulated giraffe, Giraffa reticulata, from East Africa, has large, four-sided liver-colored spots separated by a sharply defined network of narrow white lines.
A large bull giraffe weighs two tons. Cows are two or three times shorter than their mates and weigh about 12 hundred pounds.
Giraffes seem to have no fixed mating season. The newborn calf, which arrives 14 or 15 months after mating, is a mere five and one-half feet high. An ungainly little creature, it is all neck and legs. Somewhat wobbly at first, a baby giraffe can stand and move around under its own power 20 minutes after birth. For the first nine months, the calf is dependent on its mother's milk. After this it is tall enough to reach the branches of the acacia tree and feed itself.
The giraffe has a fairly long life expectancy; it has lived in captivity for 28 years.
