The smallest of all foxes is the Fennec fox of the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. It has a creamy colored coat, is about 13 inches long and 10 inches tall and weighs about 3 pounds. Its very large ears, about 6 inches long, can pick up the sound of prey that is underground. This desert fox is rarely seen.
Since this fox dwells in the desert, it is designed with specially adapted feet, densely furred, making it possible for it to run across the sand. It is able to go for long periods of time without water.
Like many other desert creatures, the Fennec Fox is nocturnal. Its prey includes insects, rodents, lizards, birds and their eggs. It lives in underground dens.
The Fennec fox is monogamous. It forms a family unit of up to 10 individuals that includes the parents, offspring (usually 2 to 5) and possibly the offspring of the previous season. The offspring, called kits, are born from February to March after a 50 day gestation. The cubs are weaned in about 70 days and remain with the family until their first birthday.
