The Bat-eared Fox(Otocyon megalotis) lives in Africa. There are two main populations; one in South Africa and the other in East Africa. These little foxes are from 20 to 28 inches long, stand 12 inches high and weigh about 8 pounds. As their name implies, they have large, dark, bat-like ears. The coat is a mixture of grey and beige; the hairs black tipped. The legs are black as well as the tail tip.

Bat-eared foxes prey mainly on insects (harvester termites in summer and ants in the winter), but will also take invertebrates as well as some fruit. These foxes are nocturnal and prefer a habitat of open woodland and grassy plains. In winter they forage during the day. The large ears are very helpful in their search for insects. They can hear the insects moving about underground.

They live in pairs (maintaining the bond for a lifetime) and both parents rear the young. The gestation period is two months. There are generally from 2 to 5 cubs, which are born in a den that is sometimes dug by the foxes but more often is an abandoned den excavated by some other animal. These little foxes are not territorial.

Some animals that prey on the fox young are jackals, hyenas and badgers. Lifespan is from 6 to 13 years. They can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.
