The Pekingese is a small, long-haired dog that makes a perfect apartment companion. It is a loyal pet and affectionate with its master. This is a sensitive breed; scolding can make it stubborn. Perks need little exercise but should have a place to play, such as a fenced yard. Keep the coat combed and the teeth cleaned. The Pekingese is suspicious of strangers, but okay with other pets.
With a 4000 year old history, the Pekingese was bred in China. It was a favorite of the imperial family in Peking. British and French troops found these dogs in temple ruins in 1860, and took them to England.
The Pekingese can have a variety of health issues, such as eye cuts, respiratory problems, heatstroke, spinal disc problems. Annual veterinary checkups will keep ahead of any health issues.
This dog is not generally good with children. Children should be taught to respect pets before allowing them to play with a Peke. These dogs also have a tendency to bark and wheeze.
