The Pembroke Welsh corgi may be small on stature but it is big when it comes to intelligence. This is an excellent herding dog, very active and athletic. The breed originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is one of two breeds known as Welsh corgis: the other is the Cardigan Welsh corgi. The difference is the length of the tail. The Cardigan has a long tail and the Pembroke's tail is docked. The corgi is the smallest dog in the Herding Group. Pembroke Welsh corgis are famed for being the preferred breed of Queen Elizabeth II, who owns several. British royalty has favored this breed for more than seventy years.

The Welsh Corgi probably comes from the same stock as the German basset. However it was also the Celts who brought a similar dog to Great Britain. The breed was recognized in 1934.

The height is from 10 to 12 inches and the weight should be less than 30 pounds. The Cardigan's hair is short and stiff and comes in a variety of colors but no white. The Pembroke's hair is uniformly reddish, sand colored, fawn or black with areas of white on its paws, chest and neck.

This little dog is friendly, intelligent, hard working and easy to train. It was originally used to herd sheep and cattle. They make good watchdogs due their alertness and tendency to bark.
