The Collie comes from the highlands of Scotland and Northern England. Some believe the dog may have been brought to the British Isles by Roman conquerors in the middle of the first century, A.D. The Collie is a hardy, quick-witted dog that is an excellent sheep, cattle, goat, and pig herder.

Collies are about 25 inches high and weigh usually between 65 and 75 pounds. Collies are very intelligent and are quick learners. They love people and children and are family oriented. These sensitive, playful dogs love the great outdoors. Collies get along well with other pets, too. They require a lot of exercise and will become easily bored if left alone for extended periods. They are very good at finding things to do if they are bored, which will often include digging, barking and other general destructive behaviors.

Collies make excellent working dogs. Smooth collies are occasionally used as assistance dogs for people who are physically handicapped. Collies have also been known to be used as therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, avalanche dogs, drug-detection dogs, and fire rescue dogs.

To keep a collie's coat looking good, regular grooming is necessary. A good brushing once a week will get rid of many mats and tangles and a bath every two months or so is a good idea. Smooths are much easier to care for.

Collies live about 12 to 16 years on average.
