The Basset Hound is a hunting dog and is descended from the Basset Artesien Normand of France, which was imported to England and there bred with the Bloodhound. (Basset is a French word meaning "low-slung.") It is used for hunting pheasant, hare, fox and opossum.

It is about 14 inches high and weighs around 45 pounds. It has dark, sad eyes. It needs a great deal of exercise. It can also be a good companion dog. It is friendly with its master and good with children. Visit the Basset Hound Rescue for more information about this breed.
