Grasshoppers and crickets belong to the order Orthoptera. Males are capable of creating sounds when they rub together their wings or legs. This order has 1000 species in North America and 23,000 species throughout the world.
They have short antennae and on their abdomen there are hearing organs. They are great jumpers, using their powerfully muscled hind legs to do so. The sounds they make when they rub their wings or back legs together is used as a warning, a call to courtship or a way to indicate their territory.
Grasshoppers are capable of flight and have two pairs of wings. They are good fliers. The fore wings are called tegmina. The hind wings are folded under the fore wings.
The female lays from 20 to 100 eggs on or in the ground. The nymphs can take anywhere from 2 to 3 months to reach maturity.
