Peacocks have beautiful feathers. The male is the largest and most splendid of the pheasants. The tail feathers form a train that is almost 6 feet in length. The Common Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) has the most striking ornamental feathers of all gallinaceous birds. They are generally shown during the courtship performance. The peacock has an attractive green, blue and purple head decoratedwith a small crown of bare-shafted feathers; the back is green and blue, the underparts black, the wings black and white, the tail and flight feathers brown. The feathers of the elongated train are a resplendent green dotted with bronze, blue and green eye-spots. These are actually not tail feathers but greatly elongated upper tail-coverts.
When courting the peahens, the peacock spreads his magnificent train and whirrs the feathers. He is always sure to face the hens during these displays. The drooping wings reveal the reddish brown color of the quill feathers, and only now is it possible to see the true tail feathers, which are also erect.
The Peafowl is native of India; it is kept as an ornamental bird not only in Asia but also in Europe and America. A white form of the Common Peafowl frequently occurs among birds bred in captivity.
