This beautiful colorful bird is a Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris). It is sparrow sized (5-1/2 inches). The female is green above and yellowish below. The song is a series of high-pitched musical notes. It inhabits thickets, briar patches and woodland edges. Its diet is seeds and insects.
The nest is a cup of plant material placed in a bush or low tree. There are from 3 to 4 white eggs speckled with brown. The incubation period is 10 days. The young fledge in 12 to 14 days. There are typically more than one brood per year.
The lifespan of a Painted Bunting in the wild is approximately 5 years, although they can live longer than that.
This bird's range is in the southern central portion of the United States. It winters in the Gulf Coast states.
