The Red Panda is also called a cat bear (Ailurus). It is related to the Giant Panda of Asia. It looks more like a raccoon but has many bearlike traits. This little animal is only two feet long. The fur is long and luxurious; a deep red or rust color. The white face has a dark stripe running from the eyes to the corner of the mouth.
The tail is long and full like a raccoons. It is also banded. This little animal has a quiet friendly manner.
The Red Panda spends most of its time in the trees. It is an agile climber. It lives at high elevations from 7 to 12 thousand feet in the Himalayas of northern India and western China. Its favorite food is bamboo shoots, leaves, fruit, some insects, mice and other small animals.
The Red Panda mating season is from mid-January to early March. The female builds her nest, found in a tree hollow or rock crevice, from grasses and leaves. The gestation period is from 112 to 158 days. The female gives birth to from one to five cubs. They are blind at birth.
Females will build several nests and move her young among them. The cubs begin to open their eyes at about 18 days. By 3 months they have their fur and adult coloring. They are weaned at about 6 to 8 months.
The average lifespan of the Red panda is from eight and 10 years, but individuals have been known to reach 15 years.
