The Wolverine (Gulo gulo) is not the biggest predator in the woods, but it can be the meanest. This ferocious little mammal can drive even a bear or a mountain lion from its kill. This animal has powerful jaws, sharp claws, and a thick hide. It's about 40 inches long and has a 14 inch shoulder height. It weighs between 15 and 40 pounds.
The wolverine's territory can include 1000 square miles. It prowls around this area looking for just about anything to eat, including beaver, porcupine, birds, berries, eggs, and even deer, elk or moose. It also eats carrion and will raid cabins. It marks its catches with a foul smelling musk, repelling other predators. It can swim and climb trees. The word Gulo is Latin for glutton.
Wolverines are generally nocturnal but are also active during the day. They have poor eyesight but other senses are excellent: smell and hearing. They are found in Alaska, Canada's northern tier, and parts of Washington, Montana, Oregon, Colorado and California.
There is one litter each year with 2 to 5 young born in the spring.
Wolverines have a lifespan of from 7 to 12 years.
Class: Mammalia | Order: Carnivora | Family: Mustelidae | Genus: Gulo
