The Woolly Mammoth is an extinct elephant with long thick hair and very long tusks (15 feet long). It fed on grasses, twigs and rushes. The Woolly Mammoth and today's modern elephant had a common ancestor. The color of the fur could be from blond to dark brown. The tusks were used for foraging for food and fighting off predators and rivals.

Images of these impressive beasts were found in numerous western European caves. These animals roamed the cold tundra of Europe, Asia, and North America.

These were social animals that were known to live in herds, which comprised of adults of both sexes, along with young animals. These mammalian herbivores were about 6 to 13 feet tall. The males were larger than the females.

One young was born every year. The gestation period was twelve months or more.

Life span in the wild was about 70 years. Predators included the saber-toothed cats and humans.

A small population of woolly mammoths that lived on Wrangel Island, off the coast of Siberia, became extinct at around 1700 BC. Scientists think they may be able to revive the Woolly Mammoth through cloning.
