Weasels are mustelids, which also include minks, martens, polecats, sables, badgers, skunks and otters. And of all of these only one has a dark brown coat above and lighter colored coat below and that is the weasel. The weasel shown at left is the long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata).
Weasels are carnivores. They eat rodents, shrews, rabbits, birds, snakes, some insects and on occasion will eat berries.
These little mammals have a reputation for being ruthless killers of small animals. It would seem that not only do they kill to eat, they also kill just for the sake of killing. They will enter a rats den and kill every individual there and then stop to have a meal. Unfortunately they will do the same thing in a chicken coop, making them unwelcome in certain areas. But they are very good at keeping the rodent pest population in check.
The long-tailed weasel mates in June or July. The babies are born from 220 to 337 days later. There will be between four to eight young in the litter. The babies open their eyes on the 36th or 37th day. They are weaned when five or six weeks old. They are full grown at 10 weeks. Both parents care for the young. The adult weasel is about 10 inches long, not including the tail, which is another 6 inches.
As for the Mongoose (Herpestes), it is sometimes called a weasel cat since it has the slender body of a weasel, the short limbs of a marten and the tail and disposition of a cat. In the warmer parts of the Old World, these animals have taken the place occupied by the weasels in the north. The mongoose is adept at killing Cobras.
