Rabbits belong to the Order Lagomorpha and the Family Leporidae, which have long ears and long jumping hindlegs. They are strictly vegetarians.
There are 54 species in this family worldwide with 18 of these in the United States and Canada. The females are called does and the males bucks.
They will thump the ground with a hindleg when a predator is nearby or when frightened. The thumping sound also warns other rabbits nearby. To escape a predator they will hide in the underbrush. Also, with eyes on the sides of their heads, rabbits have nearly 360-degree vision. Predators include: owls, lynxes, bobcats, eagles, coyotes, wolves and weasels. Rabbits can live to nine years in captivity, but may live only two years in the wild due to predation. The best defense is in their numbers; rabbits are very prolific. They can have seven litters per year with 2 to 12 young per litter.The doe digs a shallow hole and lines it with her fur. Her young are born blind and helpless.
