Some say the warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) is ugly. But these guys are certainly handsome fellows.

The warthog is an African wild pig. Pigs belong to the Order Artiodactyla, which is a word meaning "even-fingered." The sub-order to which they belong is the Suiformes. They belong to the family Suidae. Pigs are not cud chewers. The cud is food that has been eaten, swallowed, then brought back up to be chewed again to a point where it is more easily digested.

A large male warthog (boar) is about 30 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 200 pounds or more.

These animals prefer dry broad plains where they forage for seeds and grasses, roots and tubers. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day.

Two to four babies are born annually after a five-month gestation.
