Mouse lemurs belong to the genus Microcebus. They are native to Madagascar, as are all lemurs. They are nocturnal and arboreal. Mouse lemurs are omnivorous and their diet includes insects, fruit, flowers, nectar and plant leaves and buds.
In the summer in Madagascar, it becomes extremely hot, and in some places the insects and vegetation the lemurs feed on may dwindle. The Mouse Lemur, not much larger than a rat (11 inches), becomes torpid and sleeps throughout that time of the year. Before they go into their lethargy, their tails grow exceptionally fat and become a reservoir of energy upon which they can draw during their long rest.
The summer den is a hole either in the ground or a hollow tree. The lemur packs it with dead leaves and dry grass till the chamber is just large enough to hold its body. After retiring, the comfort-loving creature covers itself completely with its bedding.
Lemurs breed once a year in September and October. The mother bears two young. The gestation period is approximately 2 months. The offspring are independent within two months and can reproduce after a year. The average lifespan of the mouse lemur is five years, but individuals in captivity have lived up to 15 years.
Besides man, its enemies include the civets, viverrids, mongooses, dogs, snakes and raptors.
