The mane and tail hair is shorter than the horse. The ears are much longer. The donkey is famous for its sure-footed negotiation of dangerous narrow mountain trails. Man has used the donkey as a pack and draft animal. Donkeys are patient and long-suffering and outlive the horse. Donkeys live from 25 to 47 years. There is usually one foal at a time, about nine months after mating.

There are references of donkeys or the ass in the ancient writings such as the Gospels depicting Jesus entering Jerusalem on the colt of an ass, which was in fulfillment of the ancient prophecy from Zechariah 9:9: "Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey — riding on a donkey’s colt."
