Tigers are large striped cats found in the jungles of India and Java. They can also be found in the mountains of Siberia. Tigers are usually solitary hunters. They are very powerful, attacking animals as large as young elephants, water buffaloes and crocodiles. Tigers are good swimmers.

The tiger (Panthera tigris) is an animal rivaled only by the lion in size, strength and ferocity. The only difference is in the skin and its markings. The length of Bengal tiger may exceed that of any Lion. Ten feet from nose to tail is average. The female is smaller. A tiger's markings vary from animal to animal. Tigers that live in hotter regions have shorter and smoother hair. Black and white color variations are rare.

The tigress gives birth to from two to six cubs, but three is the average. She is a very good mother, watching her cubs carefully and training them. They will stay with her until they are full grown or for about two years, at which time they are capable of hunting on their own.

Both tigers and lions are similar anatomically and physiologically. In certain conditions, as when they are kept in zoos, they will hybridize. Their offspring are called "tigons" when the father is a tiger or "ligers" when the father is a lion.
